Why is God needed to cure alcoholism amongst other things?

Dont get me wrong they do good work but why is God needed to cure alcholics and drug addicts. Why is it God that has to help them? Why dont they get praise for being strong enough to beat it themselves? After all thats who really helped them.. They prey on people when they are at their lowest ebb and then they are"converted". Why cant they still do the Good work without preeching? Make the people love themselves and make them strong on their own without saying Jesus/God has deteated this with you.He has been by your side. He has carried you through the troubled times in your life...The person themself has overcome the problems in their life and managed to survive. Give them the credit they deserve and dont convert.. What do you think?

Public Comments

  1. Possibly because "god", who after all is in charge of everything, caused the alcoholism in the first place.
  2. because they are at a particularly low, vulnerable point in their life. It's difficult for them to believe that they can help themselves, but sometimes it's easier for them to believe that they could get help from a "higher being". So, while they are really doing all the work by themselves, their belief works as a kind of totem that gives them strength....or helps them to tap into their own inner strength.
  3. Because overcoming hard stuff is easier with God by your side. It gives them a reason to live, a reason to come out of it. And then it gives them a reason to stay off it.
  4. For people in such a bad rut, it often makes it easier to have someone stronger to lean on, rather than telling them "you have to do this yourself". Maybe having a support group would do that too, but maybe not because you that support group may not be able to be there for you 24/7. They have their own lives too.
  5. Why do we need God to help us get rid of drugs and etc? Because we can not get free of our addictions without help, otherwise we wouldn't b addicted at first. We have no strenth to do by ourselves.
  6. It is a step when you hit bottom to trun your life over to God cause you realize that your analytical mind and personal will can't get you where you know you need to go. Eventually God turns your life back over to you because you realize that you includes God.
  7. I have been a Christian for many years. I have been addicted to drugs (pain killers) during that time and I couldn't have gotten through it without God. NO WAY. I give all the glory to Him who has delivered me from the grips of bondage.
  8. Because there are some things we cannot change on our own and we can only do it with God helping us.
  9. The exercises practised in Buddhism in order to conquer thoughts and actions are equally viable. This involves the destruction of the ego and a respect for all of creation. This can all be done without the necessity of a god. In other words, the individual takes full responsibility for the management of his thought and actions.
  10. No one (or very few) claim that God is essential. Having said that, more people have been set free from alcohol by religious conversion that any other single cause.
  11. you have made a few good points. Especially the bit about preying on people at their lowest ebb. I believe that they are easy targets for the god monsters because during their conversion, the blame for alcoholism is given to satan or demons posessing them and "turning them into" alcoholics thus, taking the blame away from themselves. It must be a lot easier to blame demons for your failings than yourself.
  12. First of all, there is no cure for alcoholism or other addictions. Once an addict, always an addict. It is a matter of choice. Some people find that they need help from something outside themselves to help make the choice. For some, that something is God. And for some, it is their own inner strength. Those who choose to believe that strength is God, want to share that experience with others, because it is their belief that if it helped them, it might help someone else too. Often people involved in programs will choose to say that God is the one responsible for their recovery. But if you really look at those programs, you will find that they do not specify God is the answer. It is something higher than the individual that is the answer.
