the scarlet letter - quotes interpretation and analyses?

1. “My heart was a habitation large enough for many guests, but lonely and chill, and without a housefold fire. I longed to kindle one!” 2. “He to whom only the outward and physical evil is laid open knoweth, oftentimes, but half the evil which he is called upon to cure. A disease, which we look upon as whole and entire within itself, may, after all, but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual part.” The two below are passages from the book: 3. It is to the credit of human nature, that, except where its selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred, by a gradual and quiet process, will even be transformed to love, unless the change be impeded by a continually new irritation of the original feeling of hostility. 4. No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself, and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true. Greatly appreciated! :) other than sparknotes and cliffnotes and all the other stuff.

  1. go look it up on cliff notes, that helped me when i had to do all that scarlet letter mess.
  2. Well... for #1, all I get from it is that this person was capable of love but was lonely. They say that their heart has enough room, and I think they had the motivation to find it because they say that they "longed to kindle one". #2... He's saying that he is only a man that can see the visible ailments of the patient. He's telling him that it may in fact be a spiritual (or psychological for that matter) illness instead of a physical one. He cannot see what is in the man's heart so he cannot cure him. #3 They're saying that people, in general, will love someone faster than they will hate someone (except where there is greed or selfishness involved). And that even loathing can be turned into love unless that person does something to piss them off. I think... That's how I understand it anyway. #4. They're saying that you wear many different faces. For example, you'll be one person around your friends than you will be to your mother. But then, sometimes, if you wear a mask for too long, you forget who you were to begin with. (Kind of like V for Vendetta there). I hope this helps!
