  2. YES! Dave Ramsey!! Buy his books .. sounds sort of silly, buying books to help save money; WOrks loads tho.
  3. IDK
  4. well you downsize and get rid of all wants and keep only trhe needs and live this way for 6 months and you will be on the way to a happy and debt free life --- but can you do without cell phones star bucks cable tv and internet service like i say all wants go!!!
  5. Do it. 1) Put off school for a few years until you get out from some debt 2) Get a second job to get ahead on payments 3) Forgo luxuries -- internet, TV, cell phone 4) Your hubby needs a new set of wheels but a used car will suit him just fine. Get a clunker that will take you guys through the year. Get a new car when you can afford it. 5) Cut up the credit cards Dave Ramsey's methods helped us climb out from $40K in debt. Trust me--it's tough, but you can do it.
  6. My inlaws are in a similar situation. Do you have anything you don't NEED? You can sell these things. Ask yourself, "Have I used (or worn) it in the past year?" If not, get rid of it. Consignment shops, pawn shops, yard sales, and especially ebay are great places to sell things. Save every penny from these things you've sold and put that money on your credit cards. DO NOT SPEND IT ON ANYTHING ELSE. Create a budget for your family. Allow a certain amount for groceries, gas, recreation, and misc. Stick to that! Try calling the Dave Ramsey show also if you can get through. What are you going to school for? Just a word of personal advice, nursing is a great profession for a good schedule and good money if you can handle the stress and the 2 years of school. Sometimes you go to school and never find a job with the education you recieve but nursing you will find and keep a job in a heartbeat. Also, financial aid is very helpful if you are poor enough. I got it through school and what money you don't use on school they send you in a check that you can use for you expenses. I basically got paid to go to school. But if you can, put off school until you can get out of debt. Try and get a second job to pay for your bills if you can. Also, anything you don't need aka cell phones or internet, get rid of it! Anyway, I feel for you, debt is a nasty thing. Oh and btw, cut up the cards. CUT CUT CUT. Get rid of them.
  7. 1 - stop using your credit cards except for REAL emergencies 2 - stop eating out, buying clothes, etc. When you go to buy something, ask yourself "Can I do without this today" 3 - every day, write down every cent you spend. Look it over and see if there are things you can cut out. 4 - lower your thermostat 5 - reduce the amount of driving you do (and so reduce the amount you spend on gas) 6 - consider a part time job to pay off debts 7 - list all of your debts in a spreadsheet. Include Payee, Minumum payment, Interest Rate, and Total amount 8 - sort the spreadsheet on Total Amount. If there are any small debts you could pay off quickly, pay them off (making minimum payments on everything else). This gets rid of a minimum payment, freeing that money to pay extra on something else. 9 - sort the spreadsheet on interest rate. The higher the interest rate, the less progress you're making on that debt every month. 10- pay extra on the highest rate credit cards / debts (except mortgage - that comes last). Pay minimum on everything else 11 - update the spreadsheet every week. That keeps you aware of your indebtedness 12 - keep on doing 9, 10 and 11 until you've got rid of every credit debt All the time, work on saving for emergencies. And for life. I did this, starting over $40,000 in debt. In two years, I hit a positive number for the first time - then totalled our only car the next week. It was only 18 months before I got the new replacement paid off. 10 years later I was disabled for life - and was able to afford it. With no big settlement for my injuries. It works. I think Dave Ramsey's strategy is similar. Good Luck
  8. If you're credit cards are outta control, if you're falling behind on payments, if you're broke, you certainly picked a bad time to go to back to school (money out of your pocket and less coming in from less or no time on your job) and to get new wheels. Get your finances in order first before going back to school. And the new wheels is a joke!
  9. I have read the Dave Ramsey books, and many others. No book will get you out of debt. You have to decide what you really want and how you are going to achieve it. Usually when the pain of being in debt gets so bad, action to change takes place. Perhaps you should concentrate on what you really want. Be positive and look for alternative methods of income to help you achieve your dreams.
  10. Go on a money diet! You will be surprised how much saving a few bucks here and there will add up. 1. Bring lunch to work instead of buying. 2. Get rid of luxury items you don't NEED. 3. buy most of your groceries based on the weekly sales flyer. 4. Reduce buying brand names at the market, store brand is just as good 99% of the time. 5. Use the energy saving florescent bulbs instead of regular light bulbs....they save a lot of energy therefore reducing your electric bill. 6. If you don't work...at least get a part time job. Smart spending can save you $500 a month
  11. We love Dave Ramsey at my house! The first thing he'll tell you to do is get on a budget. Write down everythying you need to spend money on in a month and compare that to how much income you have. The two should be equal. Then you want to work to get current on your bills before starting the baby steps. For more information on the baby steps, read his book The Total Money Makeover. If you can't afford to buy the book.. go to the library. That's what we did. We later bought the book when he had it on sale on his website for $10, which he does from time to time.
  12. We have paid off over $30k so far using Dave's principles. Get on a budget (his book details it and so does his website) Buy his book (as another said- he often has $10 specials). Save FAST $1000 for emergencies. Then cut up the credit cards, list your debts smallest to largest- start whacking away on the smallest debt then use all that monthly money to whack away at the next smallest debt, etc. Save up cash for wheels for the hubby- buy a $1-2000 car, just to get to work etc. Can you put off school for a little while, until you aren't sinking in debt? Read the book together and fast and you can do it with his principles. It feels great not to be always stressed about $$!!
