  1. Dave Ramsey is amazing. I am a grad of FPU and if you follow his financial advise it will most definately work for you. I paid off over 50k in one year by getting on a budget selling all kinds of things and destroying my credit cards... It is so nice to have a paid for car and no credit cards. I am not finished yet I still have a second mort on my house I am working to pay off but when i do I will know financial freedom... Life is not so stressful if you don't have any bills to worry about except food, lights, water, and shelter. My best advise to you would be to listen to his show on the radio or internet or watch him on the Fox business report because listening to other people who are winning or are in worse shape than you gives you motivation. Your road to financial freedom will not be easy but it will be definately worth every step. Look at it this way if you make it to become debt free and decide you don't like it you can easily go run up a bunch of more debt and get right back to where you are now...............
  2. I like most of what he says......list bills smallest balance to largest.....that will give you the opportunity to get a first victory under your belt to stay motivated..... Having a $1K emergency fund is really crucial.....the fastest way to build that up is......lower cable bill/cell phone/garage sale....my neighbor had one last week and on the first day made $558 bucks......wow.... I think the envelope system is a bit silly.....might be good if you have kids.....by a box of large envelopes and have the kids label and color/decorate it..... The one thing I find he consistently does that is contradictary.. is he says don't be worried about your FICO score....while telling people to sell their car for whatever and get a loan for the difference to pay it off..... Do make having a strong FICO score a priority down the road...get to ground zero and then build your score.... You don't have to be in debt to have a high score.....you simply have to show on paper that you are responsible w/ available credit......if you have a $2K credit line.....or small limits on numerous cards adding up to $2K....never ever charge more than 20% and OBVIOUSLY never charge more than you can pay off in full!!! People who say credit is terrible.....say that AFTER they qualified for the big ticket purchases....car/real estate.... I don't think you should ever finance cars.....but it's highly unlikely you or I will ever be purchasing a home by handing over an incredibly large envelope w/ cash bulging out.
  3. We've been doing the baby steps since Jan. 2007, and it's been amazing for us. We do a budget every month and review it frequently together. We are on step 2, and have paid off about $30K in debt. You can do it if you just stay focused on it. I find listening to his radio show, especially on Fridays is especially inspiring and motivating.
  4. We are graduates of FPU. The first year we paid off about $16k and the 2nd year we paid off just a little more than that- we still have a ways to go but on the road to financial freedom. We have even had baby number 2 during this process and not stressed out about the added day care cost! The budget helps immensely and we haven't had a money fight since going through FPU- disagreements yes, but not fights! We just go back to Dave's principles to settle the disagreements. I am able to listen to his radio program most days- it is great. You can listen to it on his website live from 2-5pm. Or find a radio station near you by going to his website and putting in your zip code. He is on one of the digital stations too... I think. You can also listen to archived shows on his website. Good luck and you can do it- be weird don't borrow money :-)
